Are farmers markets open in winter?

Some are, but far fewer than in summer. Of the 2,350 markets whose season we can date from a register or their own website, 722 are still running in November, 308 in December and 151 in January. On top of those, 1,212 markets and farm stands state that they are open year-round. Winter-only seasons are most common in Florida (19), Massachusetts (18), New York (13). In Florida and the Southwest the cool months are the main growing season, so their markets often run from autumn to spring.

For comparison, 1,999 of the same dated seasons are running in July. Some summer markets run a separate winter market under the same name, often in another building and on a different day (several of the winter-named listings below are exactly that), so if a market's summer season ends in October, its website is the place to look for a winter location.

Winter options by state

For each state: markets stated as year-round, winter-only seasons, summer seasons that run into December, and listings named as winter or indoor markets (whose season may not be on file).

State names link to the state's season guide where we have one, otherwise to the state page. Year-round counts link to the state's list of year-round markets. All of them nationally are on the year-round farmers markets page.

Markets with a winter season (134)

Seasons that run through the cold months, as the source states them: across the new year, from January or February into spring, or as a November-December holiday market. Grouped by state.

Summer markets that run into December (204)

Main seasons that start in spring or summer and close in December, often with a holiday market at the end. Grouped by state.

Markets named winter or indoor markets (195)

Listings whose own name says "winter" or "indoor" (157 winter, 38 indoor), from the USDA Local Food Directories, state registers and open places data. For most of them no source gives a current season, so the name is the only evidence that they meet in winter: check the market's own page or social account before going.

How to read these lists

A season counts only when a public register or the market's own website states it in text we could read, and only the dates as written are used: "October through May" is a winter season, "May 16 to December 19" runs into December. Year-round status is what the source says ("open year-round", a register's all-months flag). A register older than 2023, or a website season we could not tie to the current year, is left out. Winter markets change location and day more often than summer markets, so treat every entry as a lead to confirm. The season guide explains the summer pattern: when farmers markets open and close.
