Market days across the week
Among the 3,985 listings with a schedule on file, the days named are: Saturday 2,425 (61%), Thursday 1,409 (35%), Wednesday 1,350 (34%), Sunday 1,325 (33%), Friday 1,319 (33%), Tuesday 1,152 (29%), Monday 917 (23%). A market that runs on two days is counted under both, so the percentages add to more than 100.

Saturday morning is the farmers market's natural home: vendors can harvest on Friday, shoppers are off work, and a town square or parking lot is free. Sunday markets are fewer and often sit in larger cities, where a second weekend market serves a different neighbourhood. Weekday markets cluster around downtown lunch hours and late afternoons, when a market in a business district or outside a hospital can catch people on their way home.

Weekday markets
A weekday market is usually smaller and shorter than the weekend market in the same town, and it is more likely to pause for a holiday or bad weather. If a schedule names a weekday, the market page shows the time as the source stated it; if the time looks like a lunch window, expect fewer produce stalls and more prepared food.
How we know the day
A day is counted only when a schedule names it: either a state or city register (for example the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources, or the California WIC authorized market list) or the market's own website, read on the date shown on the market page. Listings with no schedule in a source we could read, which is most of them, are not counted on any day page even if they run every Saturday. If you run a market, tell us where your schedule is published and we will add it.
